Session 37 Prep
Set Expectations
Section titled “Set Expectations”Set the expectations for the session and communicate any above table information FIRST before starting the session…
- Next session is our Campaigniversary; prospective date is October 3rd but ik at this time Aaron is unsure about that date at this time.
- ideal everyone there, if anyone has flexibility about the other dates in the poll it makes it easier to allow that.
- This will be a combat heavy session; as we carry through this Aurevald beat in the story.
- This session has a high likelihood of more than 1 combat. I am telling you that because I think you need the help.
- Will go straight into combat with The Jormun; from there we’ll see.
- Order lunch after 1 or 2 rounds of combat depending on time; gotta keep the blood sugar up.
Recap & Re-Familiarize
Section titled “Recap & Re-Familiarize”Recap the previous session events with brevity, then reintroduce them to the world.
Last we left off…
***RECAP USING HEADING FROM LAST SESSION ***
And that’s where we’ll pick up from… < reiterate the last thing to happen/change >
Immediate Event
Section titled “Immediate Event”The immediate action for the Party to deal with.
Combat:
Section titled “Combat:”- Set the scene, get the right tone.
Plots Points/Paths Forward
Section titled “Plots Points/Paths Forward”Details about various plot threads that can be explored this session - with a subheading for each one.
Scabb’s return… Or?
Section titled “Scabb’s return… Or?”- Let Scabb have a touching return with The Fated Eight, slowly hint that he’s getting fainter
- Eventually let the pin drop that he’s disappearing;
- Scabb was summoned to this plane as a familiar, by use of The Husk’s magic via Aurevald.
- When Aurevald excised his pact; The Husk continued the binding through “Tree-revald”; who was fused into The Jormun.
- Now that The Jormun is dead; the magic binding Scabb here is gone and he is about to return to the plane he was in when you originally summoned him.
- Riff for a bit; work with Aurevald/Aaron to explain why he isn’t persisting
- Introduce The Trickster at a relevant moment
- “Is someone in need of some power?”
- “Sounds like you’re in need of a deal?”
- “So you’re just going to give up on him? I thought you were the big strong Eternal Mountain now.”
- “I’ve been called many names: The Devil, The Serpent, Loe’Key - but most people just call me The Trickster…”
Their interests align:
- He needs Baldyr dealt with; he guesses that he’s getting close to reaching where The Husk is keeping “the man you know as Toskaldr”
- “I made a deal with The Husk a long time ago; but now I’m not getting my end of it (no thanks to you lot; so you kinda owe me)”
- “Here’s the rub - I can; no strings attached, bring back your friend; forever and a day. IF; and only if, you all hurry along back through that portal; catch up with that annoying half-brother of yours and kill him before he kills your Dad.”
Details:
- “Ah you see I can’t kill Baldyr myself. Even though she wasn’t smart enough to prevent me finding a way to break it; she was smart enough wove a second spell that prevents me specifically from harming him full stop. So if you distract him; I can probably break her blessing from a distance allowing you all to hurt him…”
- “The Husk has sprouted a domain at the base of Drasiyl; if Baldyr succeeds The Husk will able to take over Toskaldr’s body and consume any-and-all realms that it wants.”
- *“Baldyr’s path has likely been slowed down by the traps set by the strange mage who walked that path many years ago… but I can’t imagine they’ll keep him busy forever.”
Guide them back through the portal; show them that the Wayward Spirits that were guiding them have congregated together to form a platform that they can travel on.
Onwards
Section titled “Onwards”- The platform will float them over the chasm at a constant pace. This will give them time to short rest if they would like. Describe the giant tree that is the centre of this realm.
- Far off in the distance; they catch the silhouette of a large, sickly tree sprouting out of the very bottom of the large tree in the centre of this ream.
- It’s hard to see in detail as even looking at it gives you motion sickness; since it’s entirely upside down.
- You can gauge based on your trajectory that this is where the spirits are leading you.
- Axton speaks up: I know we’re all pretty spent… but we’ve done a lot of good these past few fights. Let’s do our best here; for the big guy’s little guy.
- As the spiritual platform approaches the end of it’s journey; you realize that it’s suddenly speeding up. You get the sense that gravity here is wonky - given that the tree you’re trying to land atop is facing the opposite direction as you.
- I need DEX saving throws the sudden speed causes you all to start losing your footing.
- DC 17, prone if fail.
- Upon landing atop the tree platform:
- You see the top of a very decrepit tree - and directly across from you is an especially thick branch with a Humanoid figure bound by it. It is Toskaldr…
- For a moment, you think you’ve beaten Baldyr here, until you hear the crash of Wyrmrever as it lands in the centre of the treetop platform.
- He looks as unscathed as he did when he first showed up in the Terralpi ruins.
Baldyr turns to look at them all; and then away to look at Toskaldr.
- “Behold! The mighty deserter king Oden Oathkeeper; reduced to nothing by a fucking spooky, tree: ALL TO SAVE HIS BASTARD SON INSTEAD OF ME!!!!”
- “I was going to take my anger out on him directly; but since you foolishly didn’t learn your lesson from last time - mistake - I’m going to enjoy making him watch me beat the shit out of you and your friends instead…”
- I need you all to roll initiative!!
Aftermath
Section titled “Aftermath”- The Trickster speaks up; thanking The Fated Eight and returning Scabb as a permanent familiar (Aurevald takes the Fiendish Chain custom item)
- Toskaldr can be freed from The Husk but it will destabilize the Realm-Between-Realms; it would be wise to leave shortly after doing so.
- Baldyr had collected many loose pieces of paper; and a strange twist of twigs that; similarly to the Azure Fang, gave SHAI familiar vibes to that of The Big Three.
