Calendar

The people of Vaelorys have used various systems of time and record keeping throughout their history. The current system was designed after The Departure as a fresh start for Mortal life.

The current calendar was developed by survivors of The Cataclysm to unify timekeeping by those of varying levels of faith. It was designed to pay honour to existing Mortal history and traditions without directly praising or relating to the Gods.

The previous calendar of Vaelorys; developed during The Arcanic Age, is a system that has been lost to time for the most part. It is know that it had elements that were based on enchanted candles that would produce flames of different colours, sizes, and intensities at each time in a year - people learned to interpolate individuals days between four distinct periods of a cycle; New Light, High Light, Low Light, and No Light. The Current System calendar pays homage to this with four of its months and days being named in honour of this cycle.

Within the Arcanic Calendar, a 364 day year; formally called a cycle, is perfectly divided in 13 months of 28 days. The first half of each month is called the Rising Phase, and the latter is known as the Falling Phase. Months are named based on the colour of the flame from special candles used to tell time, whilst the brightness, height, and width of the flame determine the day.
