Backstory
Section titled βBackstoryβSon of a blacksmith in a small town in Terick - he was a boy when the pre-war conflicts with Orsana broke out. His Dad; disenfranchised with the fighting, employed him/taught him to work the forge to keep ineligible/unattractive to the conscription drives.
One day; when Aldus was around 12, his Dad came down with a headache and took an early rest - forgetting that the conscription camp was due to come later that day. Aldus managed to flee on a cart leaving town but was stranded in The Paradisian Coast where he was put to work as a dock worker before moving between bars as a low-level adventurer. He was known mostly for the grandiose and embellished stories he told about his expeditions from his previous town.
Firstly unable, but later unwilling, to return home and find his Father - he explored the bulk of The Coast before running into Sammel - a childhood friend who traded goods with his Father - for the first time in 40 (give or take) years. Sammel said he would speak with his Father on a trip back to Aldusβ home and let him know that Aldus was alive and well. Aldus received a letter a few weeks later requesting him home to close up his Fatherβs estate as he had unexpectedly succumb to a fatal disease. Aldus returned home and began the process of executing his Fatherβs will - including a Forgefire Funeral (corpse is cremated using the forge; before the bones are used to forge a weapon)
As he finished cleaning up his Fatherβs study - he read through an old, leatherbound journal buried deep in one of the drawers. The next night - Aldus left town without a word of a goodbye before turning himself into the Vaena Kingdom and joining the military as a conscript. (unsure if there was a punishment; either formal or informal, for effectively being a deserter)
He idolized a single recruit more than anyone - Lucius Stormwind - who quickly rose up the ranks and Aldus clung to their shared cadetship; invoking Luciusβ name wherever and whenever it could be beneficial for him - although it has rarely worked out the way he expects it to.
He has taken a βscenicβ route up the chain of command and is now a low-ranking officer of some description. He has no idea that Lucius is escorting the adventurers to the rendezvous point.
