Ryujin Cheon; or Jin as he is sometimes called, was born to unknown parents and was the successor to legendarily strong martial arts clan known as The Path Of The Heavenly Demon; which the Cheon Family had been the leaders of since it’s inception. That was before they and their followers were wiped out suddenly and without warning, according to Master Hwan; the blacksmith who had raised Ryujin since he was young.

Cavenden; a small village hidden in the Silent Forest to the North of the country of Terick, was Ryujin’s home and where he grew up. Because of their hidden nature; they rarely had visitors or travellers so Ryujin had to make friends with the other children in the village. One of these friends was a girl named Mina Song who couldn’t say his name properly and so called him Jin instead, and the nickname stuck.

Master Hwan admitted to Ryujin at an early age that he had once been associated with the Path Of The Heavenly Demon and Jin’s parents but never elaborated further on the subject.

Ryujin enjoyed learning to work the forge with Master Hwan and was pushed towards learning how to fight with a variety of weapons; but his favourite and his best was the Sword. Master Hwan encouraged Jin to take in all the world around him had to offer and to seek adventure as he grew into adolescence.

Ryujin proved himself quite helpful around Cavenden, especially as a fighter - successfully returning from numerous small jobs to collect small wild animals for the adults. After a handful of these jobs; Ryujin and some of the other boys in town were sent out to find a wild boar for an upcoming feast.

The boys managed to locate and slay a wild boar; an especially large one and were thrilled to return home to their families. However; nightfall set in faster than expected and they were forced to settle down at camp.

During the night; Ryujin and his friends were ambushed by a masked man with malicious intent. Ryujin was knocked away as he watched The Masked Monk swiftly and easily kill his friends whilst he was helpless to do anything but watch. The sudden and tragic loss triggered something within Ryujin and he began to unconsciously call forth a massive amount of power. The Masked Monk seemed to recognise that Ryujin was prime to become a danger to both of them in that moment and swiftly knocked him unconscious and fled with the dead boar slung over his back.

Ryujin awoke to Master Hwan’s voice searching for him as the light of dawn peaked through the trees. Ryujin explained what he remembered had happened whilst Master Hwan tended to his wounds. During a private moment back at the forge; Master Hwan could see his adoptive son was struggling with the loss of his friends and confused by the sudden powers he’d released in response to that trauma.

“I think it’s time I tell you some more of the truth behind your lineage…

Your Father was my younger brother; which makes me your Uncle, you and I are the last of the Cheon Family. He was the most powerful man I’ve ever seen in my life; stronger even than my own Father. There’s something in our family’s blood that grants some of us the potential for truly asinine feats of strength.

I was slated to be the 18th successor of the Path Of The Heavenly Demon, but even 5 years my junior he was besting me in combat as early as he could remember - I just never had the raw natural strength that my Father and he did. I could see some people in the clan concerned over who should succeed and I decided to take my own path in life; I left the family and ceded the succession to him. I didn’t see him for 10 years after that.

One night; I heard whispers of their demise and couldn’t believe it - so I headed up to their tower on the Northern cliffs and only found you; wrapped in a comforter and wailing for someone; anyone, to hear you. Not a sign of my brother or his wife or anyone else I once called Family.

I don’t know what happened to them or why it didn’t happen to you but I can only assume it’s because you’ve got the same blood as your Father and Grandfather.

I wasn’t sure about it until just now but I believe you are a valid successor to the Cheon Family legacy. I can teach you if and when you are ready to learn the ways of true discipline.”
- Master Hwan to Ryujin Cheon about his lineage

Shocked by the events and revelations of the past two days; Ryujin Cheon retired to his room to rest. During his sleep, he came to two unconscious realisations:

  1. an acceptance of his fate; a desire and committal to succeed his parents legacy.
  2. awareness of the fact that he was not strong enough to do so yet; and never would be if he solely relied on his strength with a weapon. He needed to become stronger physically, mentally, and spiritually to achieve his new goals.

A week later; Ryujin properly awoke from his slumber and began to train with Master Hwan, learning the fundamentals of the Cheon Family’s Monastic traditions. He soon noticed his fighting style demonstrate flashes of the same elegance and grace that the The Masked Monk wielded so effortlessly.

After a year, Ryujin set himself an additional goal; to become the most powerful fighter in the world by achieving the pinnacle of Martial Arts and blending his personal weapon-based fighting style with it.

The second year of his training brought new revelations for Ryujin. As he began to tackle the mental and spiritual aspects of his training; learning more about the history of the Path Of The Heavenly Demon, he came to realised that Cavenden was no longer dark like it had been his entire life. Master Hwan confirmed that some of the Cheon Family were known for having an ability known as “Darkvision” that allowed them to see clearly in the dark within a distance around them.

“I see… your eyes are that of your Mother’s then.

She too could see clearly in the dark, made her especially deadly during the night; and arguably scarier than your Father at times.

Continue down this path to find what other hidden powers lie dormant within you; Master Jin
- Master Hwan to Ryujin

At the end of the second year of training; Mina Song; having returned to Cavenden after a long stay in the Southwest, checked in on Ryujin and noted how much he’d grown since their last conversation. The pair shared a cup of tea together and some sweets before he returned to training. She was one of the few things he’d take a short break for.

In 920 PD; at the age of 19, Ryujin had completed all the training that Master Hwan knew how to teach him; the rest would be up to his own abilities now.

Master Hwan suggested that Ryujin explore the outside world to test his skills against more realistic opponents. He shared news of a town in the Southwest; known as Rookwell, that had been experiencing a Raider problem as of recent and needed help clearing them out. Ryujin packed his things; a tad reluctant to leave his home behind but resolved to complete his goals.

As the pair shared their farewells; Master Hwan brought Ryujin two parting gifts.

“I’ve been keeping these for a day like this…

This was the ring your Father gave your Mother when he asked for her hand in marriage; I’ve always thought it was very beautiful…

and this was your Father’s sword; and his Father’s before that. It is said that the originator of the Cheon Family forged this blade to commemorate the founding of the Path Of The Heavenly Demon.”
- Master Hwan describing the his parting gifts to Ryujin Cheon

Ryujin thanked Master Hwan for these gifts and said his farewells around Cavenden before heading Southwest towards Rookwell.
